Frequently Asked Mold Questions

What is a mold?

Mold is a fungus. There are tens of thousands of different species of mold. Mold needs moisture, oxygen, and an organic food source (like wet building materials) to grow. Mold grows best in damp, warm, and dark environments.

What is the probability my Tampa Bay or Clearwater are home has mold?

50% of Homes in the Tampa Bay and Clearwater area have a Mold Problem
A 1994 Harvard study of 10,000 U.S. and Canadian homes found that half had conditions of water damage and mold associated problems with a 50-100% increase in respiratory symptoms.

How could I be exposed to mold?

People in Florida are exposed to mold every day, usually by touching or breathing them. Because mold naturally exists outdoors and indoors, living in a totally mold-free environment is practically impossible. With the high humidity conditions in Florida we are more susceptible to be exposed to mold as other areas of the country. As mold reproduces, spores can be released into the air where they can be easily inhaled. People who inhale large numbers of spores may get sick. Possible health concerns are an important reason to prevent mold growth and to clean up mold in indoor Florida environments.

What should I do if I see mold?

Typically, if you can see mold in your home (excluding the shower or bath tub) you should call a professional to have the mold removed. You don't know how bad the mold damage is behind the wall. Typically the mold damage is much worse than you can see on the outside of a wall or ceiling with the naked eye.

How Do I Clean Mold in My Bathtub or Shower?

In order to thoroughly clean mold from shower or bath services, you should mix up a solution of baking soda and water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the solution onto the area with the mold or mildew and scrub until it becomes free.

Do I need to move out of my house or business while you perform a mold removal service?

In most cases, no you don't have to move out of your Tampa home or business. If it is a very large project, most people are not staying at the property now anyway. For small projects, we build custom mold containment chambers in the part of the home or business affected by the mold.

Will I be allowed to access the area where the mold is while you do your work?

Our mold removal technicians will show you the progress from time to time. It is not advised to enter mold removal containments without being accompanied by a member of our mold removal team.

How long does a mold removal job take?

Again it depends on the severity of the mold. We have completed small jobs in one day. We have also worked on projects that took months to complete. It all depends on the size of the area affected. Please call us for additional details.
Why can't I just build on top of the mold?

Mold can eventually rot the wood components of the house and make it structurally unsound. Also, mold eats through drywall paper, so if you build on top of mold, you may end up having to replace your drywall in just a short time. Lastly, living around mold is not healthy. Not cleaning the mold in your Tampa Bay home means you and your family can possibly get sick.

How do I kill mold?

The basic idea is to remove the mold, not kill the mold. There are very few chemicals that are successful in permanently killing all mold species. Some of these chemicals would have to be applied in concentrations so strong that the chemicals themselves may be more harmful to you and your family than the original mold problem was. Also, even dead mold spores can cause irritation and allergic reactions in people, so killing the mold won't get rid of the health risks.

Is it safe to clean mold?

It is very important to protect yourself while cleaning mold in your home or business. Wear some sort of filter mask—either an N95-rated dust mask, or a double-filter respirator with replaceable cartridge. Wear eye protection and heavy work gloves. When using chemicals, keep the room well-ventilated, wear rubber gloves, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Never mix bleach and ammonia. Cover your skin to prevent irritation, and either clean your clothing thoroughly after working, or wear coveralls that can be thrown away. Most importantly, pay attention to how you're feeling. If you start to feel sick or start to have trouble breathing, stop cleaning, get some fresh air, and use more protection if you decide to go back to the mold removal job. If you have asthma or other lung illnesses, or if you start feeling sick while working in your house, you should not clean your own home of mold. In order to successfully complete a mold removal project, we strongly suggest calling a licensed mold removal specialist to conduct the work for you.

The most important factor you control is the moisture level or humidity level in your home. Most new HVAC systems will monitor and adjust the humidity level for you automatically. Be sure to stay current with Tampa Bay home maintenance issues such as fixing roof leaks, leaky pipes, etc. right away. Good airflow from a properly working HVAC system will also help with keeping mold levels normal in your indoor environment.
